O'o with
Hibiscus
26 1/2" X 15 1/2"
On Silk with Mineral Pigments
1998
Extinction is forever
and now these birds are gone. I have only seen the skins in
the Bishop Museum in Honolulu. I would have loved to watch
them in the forest. The Hawaiian white hibiscus, the only
fragrant hibiscus in the world, is a joy to propagate. It
turns into a large tree and the flowers are so
prolific.

At certain special times here the light seems to intensify and sub-atomic particles seem more visible than usual. This is when the everyday beautiful moments amplify into en even more stunning reality. The White-eyes (Mejiro) are back on the ginger.

I started this painting after many years away from Hawaii. The mejeros are so charming and energetic as they dart about the ginger flowers early in the morning. All of Nature seemed to turn into particles of color. This is why I like to

Chinese Thrush
and Mango Leaves on a Kona Day
26 1/2" X 15
1/2"
On Silk with Mineral Pigments
2002
These are some of the things I missed while I was in Tibet.
The sea and steep cliff faces, thrushes which are shy
and have beautiful voices, filling me with good feelings.
Mango leaves, when they are new,
have incredible colors, especially striking hues of pinks and purples.

Sitting, watching
these birds as they ate Bodi berries was an enchanting

One sunset in Krabi, Thailand, we were bird watching, when this pair of birds literally raced up the tree trunk to the top, about 50 feet in all. I thought it was a squirrel for a moment because of its long tail.

Hawaiian Owls With
Lauhala

I always feel lucky when I spot the pueo,
the Hawaiian owls. You are more like to see the introduced barn owls.
There are still a few lauhala forests in Hawaii.
I am reminded of Dr. Seuss' trees whenever I see them.
