The Tsurphu Drawa Drabje Project
Phase 2 the Tsechur Drabje drawing will begin as soon as funding is available.
Because of present difficulties in Tibet this project has become part of a larger effort, which will include training a younger female workforce in the ancient tradition of Tibetan applique to continue this important tradition. The White Conch team in Lhasa will carry out the training as well as complete the Tsechur Drabje for Tsurphu. A project proposal available here.

Between 1992-1997 Terris and Leslie Nguyen Temple created the two giant thangkas for Tsurphu Gompa H.H.Karmapa's main seat in Tibet. The Giant Karma Gadri Thangka and the Mahakala Thangka. They have been for fourteen years the artists to H.H. the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa and are now requested to undertake the making of the two ceremonial silk applique banners for display in the main assembly hall at Tsurphu. These are the companion pieces of the two Giant *Applique Thangkas. These two hangings called dra. wa. dap. che. or drawa drachey one peaceful (Tsechur Drabje ) and one wrathful, ( Norbu Drabje ) each measuring 2 mts x 40mts, or 7 ft x 120 ft, will be used during the Saga Dawa ( 4th lunar month ) and the Lotsar festivals ( 12th lunar month ) anually. This will complete Tsurphu's precious applique relics lost during the cultural revolution. As with the past projects, the responsibilities of the artists range from drawing the images, acquiring the materials, supervising the sewing work in Lhasa, as well as fund raising. The sewing work for the Norbu Drabje began Summer 2006 in Lhasa. It was completed July 2007 and is being used in ceremonies now at Tsurphu The originals were taken to Rumtek in 1959 by the 16th Karmapa. These originals will be copied and installed at Tsurphu. We hope to begin the drawing this summer,2008 November 1999, the artists with His Holiness in Tibet |
