Leslie and Terris Nguyen Temple have been creating Buddhist art as well as contempoary art in their studio in the jungle on Maui, Hawaii where the inspiration is often the natural beauty of the valley around them. As of May 2005 they are again in Asia working on new Tibetan art projects. Completed Norbu Drabje Project Photos July 2007 Two 120' ceremonial banners called Drawa Drabje (dra wa dap che) to complete Tsurphu Monastery's giant applique thangka treasures, fully approved by His Holiness the 17th Karmapa, The Kagyu Lineage, and Tsurphu Gompa, Tibet
They are unique among Western artists in that their contemporary art works reflects the knowledge and experience they have of Tibetan Buddhist art and culture. Leslie and Terris have been working together for more than 17 years creating some extraordinary art works. Trained in Tibetan art, they are familiar with Tibetan Iconography, (Tibets sacred geometry) which is originally the Buddhist Iconography of India, They completed two historical monumental Buddhist images and are presently making two more, all for Tsurphu Monastery. The two giant silk appliqués are located at Tsurphu monastery, Tibet, the Karmapa's original seat and the home of the Karma Kagyu Lineage since 1187 ad. They are shown once a year during the spring and winter as part of two annual festivals. Temple Art Studios accepts commissioned work in both Buddhist traditional and contemporary art forms in sizes ranging from small to monumental. Leslie and Terris express their individual styles in their personal work while continuing to make significant contributions in the field of Tibetan art. Leslie's Art

Leslie creates fresh imagery that brings together her many influences, using silk appliqué for Buddhist images, environmental works, seascapes and unique appliqué portraits. The silk elements together into a unified work with shading and brush work following the Tibetan thangka painting tradition. Balancing the appliqué with the painting techniques into a satisfying visual experience is both challenging and rewarding and it brings many technical discoveries. This unusual hand painted silk applique technique named "tre-jar"(meaning cut-glue) finds its origin in the Amdo area of Easrtern Tibet. Immersed in the study of Tibetan Iconography and grinding mineral stone colours, I happily embark on painting thangkas. Presently, the creative practice I have evolved is an integration of my experiences and thoughts around psychology and art into a spiritual space.

Terris's Art

My paintings are influenced by Tibet's great teachers and my love of nature. All of my teachers, both artistic and spiritual, implanted in me a deep respect for Buddhist tradition. I enjoy the best of both worlds by including aspects of a rich Tibetan art tradition with my own contemporary work which include bird and flower painting. These works are painted using mineral pigments and botanical dyes on fine silk. Working for the last fourteen years for His Holiness the 17th Karmapa and Tsurphu Monastery, Tibet has lead me also into making applique thangkas. Practising the art of Thangka Painting for the past 40 years has enriched my life beyond my wildest dreams
